Counting - Peter Giblin

24th November 2007
This presentation looks at different ways of counting the same thing. This can produce interesting relationships. The examples given are both similar to Fibonacci numbers, in fact the first one, tiling a n x 1 board with dominoes and squares, is Fibonacci numbers in disguise. The second example, tiling a 'necklace', gives rise to a similar sequence of numbers called Lucas numbers. There is a pdf presentation which is best viewed in full-screen mode, and a sheet of problems. These problems are also present at the end of the pdf presentation.
