Mathematics isn't just about solving equations and proving theorems.
It teaches us to understand the world: good mathematicians can apply
their knowledge to real-world problems. This might be something as
prosaic as avoiding a bad mortgage deal (dull but nevertheless very
important), but we can also apply mathematics to many areas of
science.
