Chess and Graph Theory - Dr Stewart Haslinger

25th April 2026

As a mathematician and international Grandmaster, I have often been asked about the connection between maths and chess. There are several overlapping concepts such as logical reasoning, pattern recognition, calculation and computation, geometry and game theory. Today, we will discuss a well-known connection, the knight's tour, which is an example of a Hamiltonian path problem, but we will also look more generally into how graph theory and chess overlap.
