Scientific interests

Exact solutions to gravitational theories, including supergravity, gauged and ungauged.
Integrability in supergravity and string theory, in particular linear systems and Riemann-Hilbert problems.
Black hole entropy, black hole partition functions and their relation to the topological string.
Instantons in string theory, Euclidean supersymmetry.
Vacuum selection in string theory, its possible relation to inflation and dark energy.
Geometry of supergravity and string theory: space-time geometry (special holonomy manifolds and generalized geometry, singular geometries), geometry of couplings (moduli spaces, special geometry).
Timelike T-duality and signature change

I have published an introductory textbook on string theory.

Since 2013 I teach a short introductory string theory course as a MAGIC module (MAGIC081).
Time permitting I contribute to the Theoretical Physics Postgraduate Lectures.
In Semester 2 I teach MATH122 (Newtonian Mechanics). Registered students can access this material through Canvas, our virtual learning environment.

See the departmental 'For Students' pages for a list of projects. All projects have MATH325 (quantum mechanics) or MATH326 (relativity) as a prerequisite, and taking both gives more options within projects. I am happy consider ideas for projects in relativity and quantum mechanics which deviate from this list.
