Effective string description of confining theories

Abstract: We present an overview of the effective string 
description or confining lattice gauge theories. In particular, 
we shall focus our attention on some recent developments in the 
understanding of different physical phenomena, all related to 
the effective string description. More in detail, we will 
illustrate results on string fluctuations in gauge theories, 
string breaking in theories coupled to fundamental matter and 
confinement in geometrical theories (percolation).
